From the backrooms of the Bristol Club scene in the mid nineties, General Midi was born, as a darker and more electronic style of breaks rose like a phoenix from the ashes of big beat. Already an old hand at promoting and co responsible for one of the greatest underground club nights in the UK (Shimmy), his skill as a Dj was honed at Lakota, a club that was to Bristol what the Hacienda was to Manchester. Teaming up with production partner Eelz General Midi had been responsible for some of the most genre defining tunes in breakbeatland.
Years of dedication in the studio has led to a string of pioneering tracks and hit club singles including, The Westerner (99), Daft Funk (01) Further (03), You will Be Under (03).
General Midi’s ’99 production of The Westener was described as way ahead of its time by the Plump DJ’s and many of his early productions are still in top Breaks DJS boxes today.
This year has seen General Midi nominated for best breaks tune for ‘Furthur on TCR’ at the annual Breaks Poll Award.
Major international attention has fallen onto the ‘Midiman’ in 2004. This is a result of a steady ascension through the production and DJing ranks of the Break beat scene. As well as regular appearances at established UK nights like BlowPop (Bristol), Tangled (Manchester), and international appearances right across the globe, he has recently completed a monstrously successful tour of Australia. This included the renowned Two Tribes festival in Sydney & Melbourne, plus ending the tour with a blow out party at Sound On Sunday in Sydney.
This year and beyond will see General Midi releasing original material on TCR and Kilowatt, and the word on the wire is an album will be ready to drop before the kids open their Christmas calendars this year!
Last month, in the beautiful English countryside, saw the General play a blinder of a set in the M-Audio Breaksday Tent at the jaw droppingly good Glade Festival. We can’t wait to see him play there next year! The Glade Festival is just gonna get bigger and better showcasing the cream of the breaks scene. Definitely one festival you can’t afford to miss.
